What this covers

The numbers behind Michigan’s equine community.

Rescues, advocates, educators, and local writers often need dependable context for the scale of equine care in Michigan. This page brings together the latest complete public Census of Agriculture figures in one place.

The Census reports animals and farms that fall within its agricultural survey. It is not a count of every privately kept equine in the state, and it does not measure rescue intake, adoption, neglect, or abandonment. Those distinctions matter.

Methodology and sources

How to read and cite these figures.

All figures on this page use the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service’s 2022 Census of Agriculture. Michigan data comes from Table 18, Equine Inventory and Sales, in the county-level report. National figures come from the matching U.S. table. The percentage changes are simple calculations using the 2017 and 2022 totals printed in the Michigan table.
